Review: Diamond Horseshoe Restaurant ~ Magic Kingdom - WildGravity Travels
Diamond Horseshoe at Magic Kingdom is currently open for lunch and dinner. Recently, it was announced that this rarely opened restaurant at the park would be open for table service through only July 4th, but now we have learned it will be open through September 10th.
The menu is served family style, which I often refer to as lazy (in a good way) buffet. You can re-order any food item that comes to your table at no additional charge:
Up first was a frontier salad with chipotle ranch dressing; while all the greens and vegetables were good, the chipotle ranch dressing lacked a lot of flavor and left the salad tasting very green. If you’re a heavy or moderate type of dressing person, this will leave you wanting something stronger or requesting an additional cup of dressing. (4/10)
Served with the salad was some wonderful cornbread served with honey butter. I found myself eating cornbread on and off all the way up until it was time for dessert. The butter definitely made the bread taste even better than it already was; my only wish is that the bread was served warm. (8/10)
Next up was our main course, the Saloon Feast. On the protein (meat) plate we had: BBQ pulled pork (10/10), carved turkey breast (9/10), smoked sausage (8/10), braised beef (7/10), with a centerpiece of baked beans (5/10). Overall everything on this plate tasted great but the real stand-outs were the roast turkey and BBQ pulled pork which was really tender and seemed to just melt away as you eat it. The beans in the center were really bland and not much effort was put into flavoring them.
The other plate in the saloon feast featured corn and the cob (7/10) and baked mac and cheese (9/10). The mac and cheese was terrific and it was nice to have a different taste than the streamlined one you get across Disney property . Getting some edges of the baked mac and cheese made the dish even better. I only wish the crumb topping was a little less fine. The corn on the cob had a decent taste but the dining party overall agreed with me it needed more butter.
Finally we were on to dessert, the campfire brownie. This decadence is a brownie on graham cracker crust topped with warm toasted marshmallow. I eel like the dish overall could have been warmer and should have been served with some ice cream for those of us who can’t just eat chocolate without a glass of milk or something. I did love the personal touch of a hidden Mickey on the plate. (7/10)
In the area of service we had a great server that checked on us just the right amount of times without feeling too pushy. When she did stop by the table she would ask if we wanted anymore of anything and was quick to get it for us when we wanted seconds on a few items. The manager was very friendly as well and stopped by at least 3 times to just make sure things were going good and to make friendly conversation. Definitely that level of Disney Service difference many have come to expect. (9/10)
In the realm of atmosphere, the restaurant blends right into Frontierland Trail, once you step inside, you feel like you’re in a western saloon. The stage which used to be home to live entertainment features a self-playing piano made by Wurlitzer. The lighting in the restaurant was a little too bright and the amount of table was just about right but I think the lighting made the restaurant feel just a bit too open. (7/10)
With it being opened for what is currently listed as a limited time, I highly recommend checking out Diamond Horseshoe before 9/10/2016. It great overall food and service make it a go to sit-down choice of mine at Magic Kingdom right now. This is a lot of food though so to get your money’s worth make sure you are hungry! (8/10)
